Question

Text shifts when changing the font style or duplicating a page

I work with a colleague. We use the same InDesign files. I have recently encountered a problem. It only happens to me; my colleague does not have this problem, even though he uses the same files. Text sometimes “jumps” down a bit when I enlarge the text box, change the font size, or simply duplicate a page. I have already researched this, but have not yet found an explanation for it and nothing has helped. We both use the font via Adobe Fonts.

Do you use paragraph, character and object styles? You shold always use them. Never work without styles and manually formatting

We are having the same issue across my team. It started happening immediately upon upgrading from InDesign 2024 to 2026. A few months back, our laptops were upgraded, so we all had to reinstall the font from Adobe Fonts via Creative Cloud. The new laptops and new font version alone didn’t cause a problem, but InDesign isn’t handling composition well with converted files that were already typeset in our company’s chosen typeface. For some users, the text appears CORRECT in the original designed position but when they edit text a gap appears (proportionate to the text size), but a couple of times it appeared incorrect in someone else’s file until I edited it, and then it returns to the top of the box where it’s intended. It only happens when editing the first paragraph in a text frame, or changes that affect any paragraph hard returns (pilcrows) in the text box.

I conclude this is due to a change in font settings for the font we’re using. Changing the font or font weight in the paragraph style and changing it back doesn’t help.

This issue has nothing to do with baseline alignment. No styles are set to align to baseline, and if I change the document baseline grid, nothing moves. It only seems to be happening to the first line in a text frame, and while we use object styles and paragraph styles, we’re using consistent templates and nothing in the styles explain irregular behavior.

We’re also on Windows machines. Our font is issued by a reputable foundry, not open source, Google, or Windows.

    Few clarifications:

    • It also happens when changing the size of a text box, even by a hair, and even if text doesn’t have to reflow
    • It consistently happens for users who are using the locally-installed version of the same font. (As I can’t find a way to check the font version through Adobe fonts, I’m not sure if this is because of a font versioning issue.)

But do you use styles? This is a must do, both of you.

    Hi @Lina36251441,

I hope the suggestions shared by experts helped improve the text shifting behavior. Could you please let us know if the issue is now resolved after trying those? If you are still facing the problem, please share an update so we can look into this further with you.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi @Lina36251441 , Does the problem happen if you set the text frame’s Text Frame Options>Baseline Options>First Baseline Offset to Cap Height?

Simply changing this setting causes the text to shift. When I then duplicate the page, it does not shift. However, as mentioned, when my colleague opens the same file and does exactly the same thing as me, he does not encounter any issues.

But yes, it is possible that my colleague does not have exactly the same font version.

The Ascent, Cap Height, and xHeight lines are set by the font designer not InDesign. It is possible to have different font versions with the same name. See if this thread on font versions helps:

Despite saying you are all using the fonts from the same source (Adobe Fonts), make sure you don’t have any old installs of the same font somewhere on your system from other sources. Many of the fonts available in Adobe Fonts and or Google Fonts are released on an open source licenses, so different VERSIONS of the fonts from different sources may have different metrics built into them, specifically in regards to the Ascent height in each font. If the change you are mentioning occurs at the top of a text frame, and your frame is set to Baseline Alignment of Ascent, this can change where the first line aligns depending on who opens it and which EXACT version of the font you/they are using. It won’t necessarily show right away, as text is only recomposed when it’s required to, e.g. when you start to edit or you do things like move or copy a block. Something to look at anyway.

I have already deleted other fonts from the system, so that only the Adobe font is available. But yes, it is possible that my colleague does not have exactly the same font version. It is very strange, as the problem occurred suddenly. It could possibly be related to the InDesign update, but I am not entirely sure. Otherwise, I cannot think of anything else that has changed.

What are your InDesign and operating system versions?

InDesign version is 21.2. I already tried reverting to an older version, but that didn't help. Maybe I'll test it again just to be sure. System is Windows 11 Enterprise, HP ZBook Firefly 15.6 inch G8 Mobile Workstation PC, Processor 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1165G7 @ 2.80GHz, 2803 MHz, 4 Cores. My colleague works with the same system, the same device.
