Text stroke with stroke fill color and zero stroke weight yeilds strange results.

You don't specify the font, but elaborate old style fonts, especially those with 'antique' finish, often have complex hinting. Messing with their edges and outlines can do odd things. 

This is even more true of fonts from lesser quality sources, where hinting and kerning data might be skimpy.
