Question

Text to Image generated images disappearing/ vanished upon reopening in InDesign

Hey gang,

While experimenting with asking the (Artificial Intelligence) Text to Image (Beta) to generate images into graphic frames, we have experienced this:

After saving, closing, and re-opening an InDesign document, we found that some of the graphic frames were now empty of any AI-generated content. They vanished.

Has anyone else experienced that?

Hello!
The same keeps happening to me also. My operating system is MacOS Ventura 13.6.9 (22G830) and my InDesign version is the latest.

Sometimes generating images works just fine, but sometimes instead of creating new versions, InDesign replaces the already created versions in Text to Image variations window. The replaced image on a page might still stay as it was, but when I click it, it gets replaced with the new version that replaced the old version. And of course if I remove those versions that have replaced the old versions (that can be still seen on the page), next time I open the document the images are missing.

Photoshop works more clear because it creates variations of different images/layers separately and not in the same view/window. I think this might also be some memory issue because my InDesign has crashed few times while using Text to Image.

Hi @hahvensa,

I’m sorry to hear you’re experiencing this issue with the Text to Image feature—it sounds incredibly frustrating, especially when you’re trying to create new versions. Thank you for sharing your details and experiences.

To help us get to the bottom of this, could you please share a bit more information?

  • Version of your InDesign and details of your operating system.
  • Are there specific steps or conditions where this issue seems more likely to occur?
  • Have you noticed any patterns, like the number of variations or the types of images, that might be triggering this?
  • Could you also let me know if you've tried resetting your InDesign preferences or reinstalling the app to see if that resolves the issue?
  • A screen recording demonstrating the issue happening in your InDesign document would be helpful.

In the meantime, it might be helpful to try managing your generated images in separate layers or groups to avoid accidental replacements, as you’ve mentioned. I’d also recommend ensuring your system’s memory is optimized while working with this feature to reduce the chance of crashes.

We’re here to help you get this sorted out. I’ll keep an eye out for your response!

Thank you,

I'm having the same issue with the Text to Image beta function... when I close the document or export it some generated images go missing or are completely replaced by other generated images in the same document.

Copy Link To... also saves the wrong image.

I had some really good images that didn/t want to generate again so I ended up copying them to clipboard and pasting them in Photoshop to save as JPGs. It happened to 5 of 12  of the images placed

Hi @Ale Peinador,

Thank you for sharing your experience with the Text to Image beta function in InDesign. I understand how frustrating it must be to encounter issues where generated images go missing or get replaced unexpectedly. This certainly shouldn't happen, especially when working on important projects.

To help us investigate this issue further and provide you with a solution, could you please share the following information:

  1. A screen recording demonstrating the issue happening in your InDesign document.
  2. Any specific steps or actions you notice trigger this problem.
  3. The version of InDesign you're using and your operating system details.

Additionally, if possible, please share the InDesign file and the prompt used (if you recall them).

This information will greatly assist our team in identifying the root cause and working towards a resolution. We're committed to ensuring a smooth experience with AI-generated images in InDesign, and your feedback is invaluable in achieving that.

Looking forward to your response!

Best regards,

Anshul Saini

Well, so far nothing conclusive. But I did discover the not-obvious way of ensuring you get to keep your AI-generated artwork:

Links panel menu button > Utilities > Copy Links To...

I kinda wish the Links panel had a way to signify this is not yet a real, saved, in-a-folder link asset. It is neither embedded nor linked when first created.
