Text tool not working and other mysterious dysfunctions

I opened a file in the latest update - 18.5. When I tried to edit text, the text tool kept changing to the hand tool. I could not open the text box to edit. So, I restarted InDesign, deleting the prefs file. This fixed the hand tool issue, but then strange blue selection boxes appeared around text boxes and in random places on the artboard. Additionally, the space bar would not work on already placed text. I had to delete the text box and re-type. Never in decades of using InD have I ever seen this. Help?!

    Try turning off the GPU Performance in the InDesign settings.

    Nope, doesn't help. Not only happening in InD, but in Photoshop and Illustrator as well. 

    Concurrent with this issue: Photoshop: Export button with mouse and the enter/return keys not working on Export As dialogue box.

    Several times on starting Illstrator, I can't change tools in the tool panel. Any tool chosen results in hand tool when you click anywhere on the artboard.

    If previous version re install fixes, does that mean it's an OS 13.5 issue? Just curious...
