I am looking use text veriables to create a running header for an article with the authors name...but I don't want to include the full name in the running header. I want the full name on the title page but I would like the running headers to be first initial, middle initial (if there is one), full last name and their degree (if the have one).

The first page would look like:

TITLE

John J. Doe and Jane Smith PhD (paragraph style Author)

I would like to have the running header read: J. J. Doe and J. Smith PhD

Is there a way to do this? I currently have it set up using paragraph styles using the first instance of "Author" on the page.

To display a text in a certain character or paragraph style, that exact text must appear somewhere on the page.

My usual trick is to put such content on a (blank) line of its own, in a unique style with the text color in that style set to "[None]". If it needs to be edited, temporarily change the color text to something readable, edit, then set it back to "[None]".
