Ticket Numbering on front only of 2-sided InDesign document

Hello! I have a 2-sided work order that needs a sequential number on the front only. I know how to make a 1-sided sequentially numbered document with Data Merge from a supplied list of numbers, but it doesn't seem to work on a 2-sided document. Suggestions?

Yes, it's a 17x11 sheet of paper that we fold into 4 pages, although the InDesign file only has 2 17x11 pages. We want the number on the cover panel. We use the work order as a jacket, and place all of the relevant job documents inside. At least, that's the plan.

I would suggest you do some research on using the VDP (Variable Data Printing) module. That's absolutley the way to go. If you pre-number 100 pages in InDesign you are sending a 200-page file to the Fiery rip for processing. If you let the VDP module do it you are sending a 2- page file.

You can place a numbered list, but this sort of thing is usually better handled on the press with a vdp module or by feeding through a crash numbering machine after printing if there is any sort of quantity involved.

The only reason I can think of to put the numbers into the document (since preumably you want unique numbers on every print) is if you are printing these on an office printer one or two at a time as trhe orders come in, and for that I would enter the number by hand.

That's how we've been doing it, but we changed our work order to a folded 11x17 and were hoping to avoid the crash numbering step and just do it all at once on our digital press (which folds). If there's no easy way to print it 2-sided I'll just print the inside first and run it through again with the outside and fold and number it then. Thanks!

Do you have a VDP module for the digital press? Numbering the pages in the doc means you have to re-process each page as it prints and that will really slow down production.
