TOC Hyperlinks Not Working in Exported PDF and Unexpected Text Color Changes

I’m following online instructions to fix the problem of hyperlinks not working after exporting to PDF. Still, only some of the hyperlinks work (the same ones as before using Layout > Table of Contents, and configuring everything according to instructions).

Should I reimport the TOC text from another document and re-style it???

    Hi Elizabeth:

Setting up a correctly generated table of contents with formatting is complicated, as you are learning. My suggestion is to separate the hyperlinks from the formatting as you get up to speed::

    1. Generate the TOC without specifying formatting. Yes, it will look awful, but pause, export to PDF and test the hyperlinks. If they work, the TOC itself is set up correctly, as are your export settings. The rest is just formatting. If not, stop and let us know.
    2. Next, create paragraph styles to format the various TOC levels. For example, for a Head 1, you might make a TOC Head 1 and set the size, spacing, tab stop, etc. Repeat for any other levels. Assign them manually to test.
    3. Once they look good, following Dave’s advice, go back to Layout > Table of Contents and map the document styles to the TOC styles. For example, tell InDesign that Head 1 should map to TOC Head1. Repeat for the other levels.

As we troubleshoot TOC formatting, it is helpful to save the Preset (Save Style button, right column) each time we make a step forward, and of course, Replace the Existing TOC should be enabled.

Once all this is working, come back and show us what you have and we can help with the “hyperlink formatting”. Just a note, we typically don't add any special formatting to a table of contents because most people recognize a table of contents will have hyperlinks. Every place else in a document we do use hyperlink formatting as a visual aid, but if you decide you still want it, we can definitely help.

@Barb Binder Unfortunately, this new forum buries replies and unless you spend minutes expanding everything, you don’t see them.

This was my post from yesterday:

Paragraph styles are the only way to use the TOC.

You use a style throughout your document, such as a Heading style.

You create another style for what you want it to look like on the TOC page.

Repeat for each level of text in the TOC.

In the screen capture below, the top arrow shows the style I’m looking for throughout the document/book.

The second arrow shows the style displayed on the TOC.

(Note that I’m create PDF bookmarks too.

Your idea of testing the links without formatting was a great idea.

I’ve never had a problem with links in my TOC.

If this is using an InDesign Book file, did you export the entire book?

What are your PDF export settings?

    Thanks for the quick reply!

I am creating a 10-page newsletter in InDesign 21.2 on Mac OS 26.3

My settings are what I was instructed to do. None of the links work now, after previously styling each link with Character Styles > Hyperlink (then adding back the intended color and spacing for my TOC to match the layout). When I did it that way, only some of the links worked, so I tried following instructions found online.

And yes, I’m exporting the entire 10-page document to PDF so that our webmaster can upload to our site and send out a link to members to open it.

I’ve tried saving as High Quality Print and as Press Quality. Nothing seems to help, and now none of the links are working.

How are you testing the PDF? Are you exporting Interactive or Print? Fun fact: Print retains hyperlinks.

BTW, telling us you followed instructions is pretty much meaningless without telling us what those instructions were.
