Question

Transfer InDesign groups to Illustrator for saving

I'm looking to send InDesign grouped objects (graphics, text, and simple lines) to Illustrator, with the goal of saving .AI files of the groups.  This would make it easy to edit the text and arrange the content in AI later.

Iterating through the ID document to get the desired groups and saving them in AI is no problem.

I'm wondering what the recommended method would be for getting the groups from InDesign to Illustrator is.  It seems like a batch copy/paste method would be problematic and slow.  Any suggestions?

Right now, I'm leaning toward batch exporting ID groups as individual .EPS files, then working with them in AI.  That way I'm still able to adjust the group elements in a vector format, then save as AI from there.

I'd prefer PDF/X-4 so that you have a chance to maintain transparency effects.

Hi jong42077404 ,

how about an export to PDF with PDF/X-4 characteristics?

You could open the PDFs with Illustrator.

Copy/paste could fail depending on the complexity of the items in the group.

Also think of details like the alignment of strokes on a path that could go wrong.

Especially if you consider alignment of strokes on live text.

Better: Find a way to recreate the elements in Illustrator from scratch using the information you can gather from InDesign.
