This is really annoying but the small bar at the bottom of my swatch palette with the trash can has gone and I can't find it! Any ideas?

Correct answer @mj

That's unusual behavior.

Resetting your application preferences to defaults shouls sort this out

Here's how you do it:

(Windows) Start InDesign, and then press Shift+Ctrl+Alt. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.

(Mac OS) While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.

Here's the link if you want to read up about it: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/setting-preferences.html#restore_all_preferences_and_default_settings

Ususally it’s the caches that cause interface problems, so try deleting your caches folder before deleting the preferences. On OSX it's /Users/username/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/Version X.0
