Troubleshooting with pharagraph styles when copy paste

Hello, I am having an issue with InDesign. When I import text into a file, apply paragraph and character styles, and then copy and paste the text into another file with the same imported styles, the text loses its font and becomes Minion Pro. Does anyone know why this happens?

I use windows 11 and the indd is 20.5.2

Thanks!

    Hi Vero,

Redefine all styles in all documents as respects the Based On. Generally, they should be set to “No Paragraph Style” and never “Basic Paragraph Style”. If you make this adjustment, the problem should go away.

Sorry, Mike. Didn’t see your post when I pretty much duped your answer.

Thanks to both of you. I do import all the styles; they're the same and are based on “Basic Paragraph.”

As for the text, I import it using Ctrl+D into a new document, where I apply styles and clean up the text. Once it's ready, I copy and paste it into the other document, to which I've already imported the styles from the document I'm currently working on.

Never base anything on Basic Paragraph style. Pretend it does not exist.

Your main text styles should be not based on any style; derivative styles should be based on those (but never Basic).

    Hi @vero_gorri,

Thanks for reaching out, and I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue. Could you please verify that the Paragraph and Character Style definitions are identical in both documents? Even if the style names match, differences in their definitions can cause InDesign to apply the destination document's formatting. Next, try using Load All Text Styles from the Paragraph or Character Styles panel in the destination document. Also, check whether your styles are based on [Basic Paragraph], as differences in this default style can cause text to revert to Minion Pro. Additionally, remove any local formatting overrides or conflicting character styles, and ensure that the original font is installed and available in both documents.

Please let us know if the issue persists after trying these steps, and we'll be happy to assist further.

Have you tried Placing the Word document into InDesign (not copy and paste)?

Check your InDesign Paragraph Styles panel to see if you have some Word Styles listed there, if so delete them.
