Trying to get rid of the "new feature" blue dots

There are blue dots peppered in the menus, hinting at "new features".
They are supposed to go away once you actually use this feature.

However for quite some time now for me those blue dots return, when not at fresh PC boot then at least after any oh so minor update of InDesign.

Since there seems to be no setting to not "bother" me with new "features", is there any workaround? Do I need to set write rights to folders/files or something like that?

Hello everyone,

I sincerely thank you for your understanding while I consulted with the product team. I wanted to share a quick update regarding the persistent blue dots, particularly those related to features such as Open PDF and Flex Layout.

The team has confirmed that these indicators will continue to be visible for a few more releases, even after you have interacted with the feature. This is the expected behavior at this moment and cannot be permanently removed on your side.

I understand how distracting this can be, and I appreciate your input. The team is focusing on a comprehensive revision, and enhancements are scheduled for future versions. I will update you as soon as I receive more detailed information from the team.

If you observe anything out of the ordinary beyond this expected behavior, please feel free to reach out. I am here to help.

Abhishek

Thank you for being active in this and actually coming back with an answer. Very much appreciated.

I'm just disappointed in whomever thought it a good idea to mess with the consistency of a UX, putting pushing some kind of agenda above (professional) user satisfaction.

Hi @Lord_Helmet,

Thanks for reaching out, and I completely understand how those persistent blue dots can get distracting, especially when they keep popping back up after updates or restarts.

I was able to reproduce this on my end as well. This behavior typically appears after you have recently cleared preferences, updated, or installed InDesign. The blue dots are designed to highlight new features and usually disappear after you have fully used the feature once. Once that interaction happens, they should not come back unless preferences are reset again or the app is freshly installed.

There is currently no dedicated setting to permanently disable them, but I have flagged this with the product team to check if it is something that is being tracked for improvement.

Could you let me know which version of InDesign you are using and whether you are syncing settings across devices?

Looking forward to your update, and I will keep you posted once I hear back from the team!

Hi Abhishek,

My InDesign Version is 20.4.1

I'm not syncing settings across devices, everything runs on one (Company) PC.

Issue persists for a couple of minor InDesign updates.

I have not paid attention to the other programs of the suite, like PS or AI, though. When I get to it I can check if that's there, too or if it's only an InDesign thing for me.

Hi @Lord_Helmet,

Thanks a lot for sharing these details and confirming your version. I'm checking this behavior further with the product team to see if there's a more permanent solution or a way to improve how these new feature indicators work. I'll keep you posted as soon as I have more information from them.

Looking forward to your update once you check other apps too, and thanks again for your help in investigating this!

Abhishek
