Question

Type tool doesn´t work on left pages

Hello all,

i am new to this forum and if my question is not clear enough, feel free to ask me additional details, and I will try to provide them.

I am working in Adobe CC, Adobe InDesign Trial Version (I am paralelly studying how to install new CC on my PC).

I imported a text from word to InDesign and everything went fine untill I realised my type tool doesn´t work on left pages at all. It does show the type tool cursor, but only on the very beginning in the upper left corner, before text, on every left page, but wherever I click inside the text, the cursor doesn´t activate there, it stays in that upper left corner, freezed.

Right pages work just fine and I can apply every single Paragraph style on them.

When I was creating a document, i checked the box next to "Primary Text Box" and when the document opened, I created text frames on both facing pages in my A-Master Pages. "This story is the master´s primary text flow" is what I checked on the first frame, and both frames are connected. I applied them to the entire document.

Does my problem with type tool exist because I included primary text box or is there something else I would need to search for in order to find the solution?

I checked if my text frames on left pages in document are locked, but they are not.

Thank you in advance

Edit:  Now I realized that the type tool cursor works from page 132 till the end (166), but not on the pages before. That confuses me even more.

Can we see a screenshot of your Master Page along with the Layers panel. Click the disclosure arrow to the left of the Layer listing to reveal all objects.

I'm wondering if you might have a background object on the left-page of the Master Page spread. If so, try selecting that object and in the Wraps panel, choose no Wrap (the left icon). A "Rouge Wrap" can make a Text Frame impossible to type in, because all text is just pushed to the next Frame.

Hi Jeff!

Volpina777, show your layers panel of both your spread and the Master pages with the layer expanded.

But there is one thing to be wary of about deleting objects from the Master. It may be a good idea or it may be a disaster. You said you enabled Master Text frames when you created the document, so you should see them on the master. What is not clear is if you are using them on your pages or if you created new frames. You want to be careful about deleting the master text frames until you know if you need them.

Screen shots will help us determine what you have. If it's some other object as Jeff thinks, you can delete it.

Jeff, I am on my iPad. If there is a master text frame that is being used on the pages and then it gets deleted, does the text disappear or does it convert to regular frames?

Hi Jane,

If you delete the Master Text Frame on the Master, the text on the local pages remains as a regular text frame.

Best,

Jeff

If the type tool is stuck in the upper left corner, it may be in a frame. Try typing. Does it do anything?

Press escape. Does that select the frame?

Open your layers panels and spin open the layer. What do you see?

Yes, creating a primary text frame creates text frames on the master — both the left and the right. It sounds like you then created a second frame for the right pages?

Read this article from Steve Werner about Master Text Frames to learn how they work.

@jane-e, yes, escape selects the frame.

I tried to type with type tool on the "freezed" pages, and it does type, but over the document text, and not aligned with it, as if it is on its own layer.

"Enter" also works, in a way that it sends cursor down, but arrow keys are not working.

However, I only have one layer in layers palette, and when I switch it off, entire document disappears, so I guess both left and right pages are on the same layer. Or i may be wrong.

I noticed that the frames containing non-editable text on left pages have italic "O" sign on the bottom right. When I come over it with cursor, it says: "Click to explore more type options", but when I click on it, I get:  "OpenType properties are not applicable".

That "O" sign is non-existent on editable right pages.

Here is the screenshot of my layer:

Sorry for being a bit slow in understanding, but I am in the process of learning the basics of InDesign.

PS. Almost forgot: in the beginning I manage to apply Body Text (New Paragraph Style) to the entire document (by choosing "Select All"), but something obviously went wrong after that, in the proccess of my work on the document, that caused this problem.

did you import the text file to the page or to Master? check it pls, it might be a cause. Working in the wrong part of document window is a very common mistake. The text must be imported to the normal page, no to Master.
