Typographer's Quotes InDesign bug?

Hi,

I've recently switched from Mac to Windows and (mostly) everything has been plain sailing (though having to overcome 5 years+ of keyboard commands muscle memory is tricky!).

However, I've encountered an issue with Typographer's Quotes not working. I've searched extensively online and tried all the usual suspects (Typographer's Quotes is on in preferences, both Document and without any documents open; reset preferences) but I've been unable to fix them.

After further investigation, it seems that the issue only occurs using a single typeface (Skolar Latin, installed as OTF versions in Windows 10 Pro itself, rather than via Typekit); this is unfortunate, as it's the typeface chosen for our corporate style. When typing double or single quote marks in InDesign with any weight of this typeface, then the straight version is inserted, irrespective of the Typographer's Quotes setting. If I do a search for the relevant double or single quote marks and replace them with the same (as this used to fix the issue on the Mac) it replaces them with the straight version, again, irrespective of the Typographer's Quotes setting. However, if I use any other typeface, the issue doesn't occur - all quotes are inserted with the correct Typographer's version.

I've also conducted some other investigation and, basically, narrowed it down to being an issue (bug?) with InDesign CC 2018 (version 13.1 x64) on Windows 10 Pro (version 1803, OS build 17134.165; Dell XPS 8930 / i7-8700 / 16GB RAM / GTX-1060 6GB). I've arrived at this conclusion due to the following reasons:

  • Typographer's Quotes work fine in Illustrator CC 2018 / Photoshop CC 2018 / Microsoft Word on the same PC - hence not an issue with the OTF files, or anything relating to the font files themselves.
  • The issue doesn't occur when opening the same file in the Mac version of InDesign CC 2018 - hence not an issue specifically relating to the document file, InDesign preferences, or and Paragraph / Character Styles, or OTF files (as all are the same as on the PC).
  • The issue is reproducible in different InDesign documents on the same PC.
  • The issue is reproducible on a different PC.

Please can anyone advise whether anything can be done / how to fix it? All help gratefully received!

Hi all,

Just some quick feedback with this issue. I was having a problem with printing with this font too; trying to print on a couple of our printers just produced garbled characters, which was an issue on both my desktop and laptop machine (both Windows 10) - although, strangely, it did print out on another printer (which I couldn't fathom).

In the end I was able to resurrect the MyFonts account where the fonts were originally bought from and I redownloaded them; I deleted the previous copies of the installed fonts, restarted, then installed the freshly-downloaded versions. This fixed the printing issue (much to my relief). Quite by accident, I saw that it also has fixed the typographer's quotes issue with this font as well - which I'm doubly grateful for!

Anyway, I thought I'd feed back and let you know how it was resolved - a weird font corruption issue. Strangely enought though, it looked OK on screen, and I could also create a PDF ok too ...

Thanks Bill and Barb,

I really appreciate the time you've spent to reply!

@Bill: I've found several workarounds, including the ones you've mentioned (thanks for the reminder for the keyboard commands for the PC version! ); I'm reasonably proficient using GREP but, as you say, it's tricky to replace straight quotes with the correct typographer's version. I'll probably use a combination of workarounds until a fix is available (which would be the ideal situation); for a handful, I'll use the keyboard commands to insert the correct quotes or, for more lengthly changes, I'll change the overall typeface used, do a find / replace to change the quotes to the correct typographer's versions, then change the typeface back (or reapply paragraph styles).

@Barb: I did wonder whether this was an issue with OTF font files being used, but the Typekit versions are unaffected; however, I've ruled out it being an issue with OTF files installed particularly as I have another typeface (MuseoSans - installed locally as OTFs) which isn't affected by the same bug. However, that's not to say that the Typekit version would fix the issue; though I'd find it difficult to justify the expense to my boss when we've already purchased the typeface and has worked flawlessly for the past five years .

Thanks for the link to the software fix page; I'll post the issue there and see what happens! I posted on the community forums first in case I was missing something obvious that I'd overlooked in the Windows switch ...

Hi Spiffey:

Another possible workaround would be to invest the $30 to try out the Typekit version to see if the issue persists.

If you are looking for a software fix—which I think you are—you will want to log this as a bug here: Adobe InDesign Feedback. The InDesign engineers monitor that page. You are currently on the community forums—where those of us with strong InDesign skills volunteer to answer user questions. We do not work for Adobe so we cannot fix the software.

A workaround for this might be to either insert the smart quotes using the Glyphs panel or through keyboard commands. To insert a left quote on a PC type Alt-[ (left bracket). A right quote uses Shift-Alt-[. A single left quote uses Alt-] and a single right quote uses Shift-Alt-]. It is tricky using Find/Change to fix the quotes globally through the key commands. When you place the straight quote in the Find field, whichever key command you use in the Change field will change every instance of the straight quotes into that direction quote. However, if you then run a second and third Find/Change with the key command you used in the Change field in the first run now put into the Find field now followed by a space for the second round and a period for the third round and the correct key command for the opposite direction quote in the Change field you can change the remaining instances to the correct direction.

It is possible that there is a GREP version of this or even a script available. If so, hopefully, somebody will post it.
