Unable to crop images in InDesign

I always use the selection tool (black arrow) to drag any control handle on a selected image frame to crop the image.

But out of the blue, when I drag the control handle it 'resizes' the image, but does not crop it.

I cannot seem to find the correct help NOT to resize, but crop my image.

I have encountered the same issue. My questions are, how do I get to the Auto-Fit button and why does InDesign change my preferences?!

    Hi @Laura35985972hhkx,

I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble with cropping images in InDesign. It can be frustrating when preferences seem to change unexpectedly.

To disable the Auto-Fit feature, follow these steps:

    1. Click on the frame that contains your image using the Selection Tool (black arrow).

    2. Look at the top of your screen where the Control Panel is located. If you don’t see it, go to Window > Control to display it.

    3. In the Control Panel, you should see an option called Auto-Fit. Make sure to uncheck this option. This will stop InDesign from automatically resizing your images when you drag the control handles.

    4. Now you can drag the control handles on the frame to crop your image as intended without it resizing.

If your preferences change again, it could be due to a setting being overridden or a reset in preferences. If you need further assistance, feel free to ask!

Thank you for your patience, and I hope this helps!

    Best,

I'm having the same problem and unchecking the Auto-Fit didn't solve it 😞

    Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. As George mentioned, you can turn off the Auto-Fit feature from the control panel. For more details on frames and graphics in InDesign, you can refer to this help article: Work with frames and objects in InDesign
