Question

Unable to draw a frame the full length of the page

Sometimes I want to draw a text or graphics frame that is the full height of the page. Indd won't let me do that anymore. The frame automatically begins 6 pts down and ends 6 pts above the bottom of the page. Then I have to do two adjustments.

I don't have any grids turned on.

I'm using CC 20.3.1 x64 on Windows 11 Pro.

Any ideas?

Hi @sidneydavenport ,

could it be that the document contains a customized object style where the position of the frame is defined?

And if this is the case this custom object style is defined as the default one?

Just like this in my German InDesign where position is defined. Drawing out a new text frame under these conditions always will create one 20 mm and 10 mm away from the page edges:

As soon as this object style is not the default anymore I can draw out text frames as I'm used to it without any restrictions on position. The [T] icon is not positioned at the right of the style's name anymore. If this is the case with a custom object style in your document, just drag the icon to the object style for text frames in brackets like below:

This is a long shot, but I remember there was a version a few years back that messed up the cursor accuracy if the resolution of the monitor was changed while InDesign was open. Hopefully, the bug has not returned...

Hello,

You can check Text Frame Options (Ctrl+B) – inset spacing is likely set to 6 pt top/bottom. Set to 0 pt.

To fix for all new frames: Deselect everything, then set inset spacing to 0 in Object > Text Frame Options.

Also check:

Paragraph panel: enable Ignore Grid.

Margins: Go to Layout > Margins and Columns.

Best Regard,

Theresa

If I read the OP correctly, the problem is drawing the frame itself, not the text in the frame. Also, the text inset would not have affected graphics frames.

Just to double-check: having grids visible is not the same as having grid snap on. They are two separate settings--that is, grids can be hidden but snap on; grids can be visible but snap off; grids and snap can be either both on or both off.
