Unable to open InDesign file after updating to Id 21.0, shows 'created in a newer version' error

I can no longer open my InDesign files. The following error message appears:

"InDesign could not open the file because it was created in a newer version (Adobe Indesign 21.0). You can convert and open this file, but content created with features from the latest versions may be lost. To take full advantage of all features, it is recommended to update to the latest version."

I have updated my version and tried to convert the file, but neither worked, and I can no longer access my file. Is there any other way I can still open my file?

Hi @lena-marie_4747,

As the expert suggested, please check if you might still have an older version of InDesign installed and that's the one opening by default when you double-click your file. Try launching InDesign 21.0 directly from the Creative Cloud desktop app and then open your file from there. If it opens fine, you can set 21.0 as the default app for .indd files, so it always launches with the latest version.

Please give this a try and let me know if it works for you.

Hi @Abhishek Rao

I tried what you suggested, and it worked! I was able to open the file without any issues after launching InDesign 21.0 directly from the Creative Cloud app. Thanks for the help!

You likely didn't remove your earlier version and that is the version you have open while trying to open a file that you created in version 21.
