I can not open my InDesign files all of a sudden. When I go to open them, InDesign completely shuts down. I've tried all of the chatbot's suggestions to no avail. Any ideas?

Hi @tammys53764186,

I wanted to check in and see if the suggestions shared by the experts helped resolve the issue, or if you're still seeing InDesign crash when opening files. I also checked for any crash reports submitted using your community email address, but couldn't find any so far. Could you please confirm whether the Adobe Crash Reporter appears when InDesign shuts down? If it does, please submit the report and then share the email address used for submission with me via DM, so I can review the logs. Ref: https://adobe.ly/4bkr1cL.

Additionally, please try the troubleshooting steps outlined in this article and let me know how it goes: https://adobe.ly/4aGaVde.

Looking forward to your update so we can assist further.

  • Does this happen to just some files or all files? If some files only then they might be corrupted
  • Look at the possibility of font corruption as well
  • Where are the files located? If it is on a n/w drive then try opening them from a mounted local drive

Try launching InDesign first and opening the file from File → Open, then reset preferences (Ctrl/Cmd + Alt/Option + Shift on launch). If only certain files cause the crash, they may be corrupted—Open a Copy or test from a different folder.

What are your InDesign and operating system versions? When did the problem start (after InDesign or system update etc?) Does it happen when you open files from both the Open dialog and by double-clicking on the desktop?
