Question

Undo does not work properly on deleted text, it only deletes one character at a time instead of whole block

I am on a Mac and this is a problem with InDesign 2018.

If you backspace delete two or more characters from text, undo (Ctrl+Z) only restores one character at a time instead of the whole block that was deleted in that action.

Undo works fine InDesign 2017, and it works fine in Word and other apps.

I have tried deleting InDesign preferences and caches and even reinstalled it with import previous prefereces unchecked, but the problem remains, and I cannot find any solution. Can someone please help?

I am on a Macbook Air now running High Sierra 10.13.2 (but problem was stlll there in previous versions of OSX).

THIS IS A HUGE ISSUE for me too!!! IF I TYPE IN A LONG WORD AND CHANGE MY MIND, I NOW HAVE TO DELETE DELETE DELETE DELETE or go to my mouse and highlight it. Undo made a ton more sense before. Like it still is in all other applications.

I can't find anything about how to deal with it!

Hi Jodie:

I understand your frustration but this is a community forum staffed by volunteers who do not work for Adobe. Two options when you type in a long word and change your mind:

  • Tap Cmd+BackspaceDel (Mac) or Ctrl+Del (Win)—second to last row in the table I posted above
  • Put in a feature request here to restore the earlier behavior: Adobe InDesign Feedback

Edit 3/8/16: Corrected Mac shortcut to Cmd+Del.

Thanks, Barb. I tried playing with CNTL+Delete (actually command+delete) and I will see if it solves my problem. Maybe it will. Meanwhile I posted it under bugs AND features. Thanks!!

Sarah, you are correct.

Mac OS X 10.12.6

InDesign CC 2018 13.0.1

If I highlight a selection, and press Delete, the entire selection is removed. Edit > Undo restores the entire selection.

If I press Delete repeatedly to delete one character at a time, Edit > Undo restores one character at a time.

InDesign CC 2017 12.1.0.56

If I highlight a selection, and press Delete, the entire selection is removed. Edit > Undo restores the entire selection.

If I press Delete repeatedly to delete one character at a time, Edit > Undo restores the entire selection.

You can report this new behavior here, with a request to return to the old behavior:

Adobe InDesign Feedback

If you come back afterwards and post the link, others with the same question will see it, and can follow the link to vote it up.

Hi Barb,

thank you very much to point out the differences.
Now I can follow our OP Sarah with her problem.

But: I would not vote to change the behavior back to what we see with InDesign CC 2017.

Uwe

Thanks for replying, Uwe.

I must admit, I cannot see any advantage in the change at all, and in my job it is proving very time-consuming. The way it was before was much easier for me.

Best,

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

I cannot see the issue with my version of InDesign CC 2018 13.0.1.207 on Mac OS X 10.11.6 (German).

Uwe
