updating link removes transformation

Often, I link to the same file many times in a document (I have an Illustrator file with many little illsutrations that I have linked to throughout an InDesign document). However, when I update the link after adding another illustration, InDesign often loses the transformations I have made on the previous instances. Is there any wa to prevent this?

Are you changing the size of your Illustrator file when adding illustrations? That would skew things for ID. I think if you're adding artboards, it should be ok.

Also, if your Illy file was set to crop to image when placing in ID, adding art would change that relationship. If set to crop to media should be ok if you're not changing the document size.

I am not changing the size of the Illustrator file, and it isn't set to crop 😞 Thanks though!

I wonder if it could be a document corruption?

Did you try to export to IDML and then reopen the IDML and SAVE-AS to a new INDD file? This would allow you to test and see if the problem persists.

That didn't seem to help...

Is there also an object style on them?

No. This has happened to me in many different documents. I don't know if that is relevant.

Are the transformations being made on the .AI file or per placed image in ID?

The transformations are being made in InDesign. So I place the file in, and then rotate, or expand the linked image. When I update the link, I lose those.

Thank you. Unfortunately it was already set to preserve image dimensions. What else might it be?
