Question

Upgrading InDesign files from CC18 v13 to CC19 v14 and IDML

Our projects usually run a year and span may hundreds of ID files. We usually keep the project in the same version of ID throughout is life cyle. In the past when moving to different versions of ID we have our in-house staff and vendors export the files to IDML and then open in the newer version. We know this is necessary if someone happens to open and save in a newer version of ID accidentally.

We have a large project that because of workflow changes we are considering moving from v13 to v14. We also use a content management system with a InDesign/InCopy workflow. Is it absolutely necessary to IDML if upgrading one version higher. With the amount of files we're looking at, it does add considerable amount of time even with scripts. Though we have found it maybe cleaner as far as file integrity.

Thanks

There is no reason to use IDML for this, and it may do you harm. Of course, keep the V13 files archived in case some horror is discovered.

Hi SSalb: Ah, now I see it. I read the first two words in the third to last sentence as "it is" and not "is it". My apologies.

InDesign can open and convert files to the next version, and that has always been my workflow.  I use IDML only when I need to convert files that need to be opened in earlier versions. I have never run into any issues with the automatic conversions.

My advice is to archive the previous year's files so they are safe in case you need to return to one of them, but note that when InDesign opens a file from an earlier version, choosing Save (and not Save as) will still present the Save as dialog box so that you don't inadvertently overwrite the original file.

Hi SSalb: Are you sharing your workflow with us, or is there a question in there that I'm not seeing?

    Barb,

We're using Vjoon K4, but the question is more about the necessity to IDML files or can we just open in CC19. We are always concerned about issues with files.

    Thanks
