Uploading Indesign Snippets on Adobe Library

Hi all, is it possible to upload my InDesign snippets to the Adobe CC Library?

InDesign snippets (.idms) are standalone files, but as far as I'm aware, you can't directly drag the snippet files from your desktop into a CC Library.

    There is a workaround, though.

You can place the snippet into an InDesign document using File > Place, select the objects, and then drag them into your CC Libraries panel. Alternatively, use the Add Elements button and choose Graphic.

That way, the artwork is stored in your CC Library and can be reused as editable InDesign objects.

I'm curious about your workflow, though.

Do you already have a folder containing lots of InDesign snippets that you're trying to transfer into a CC Library, or are you just looking for a way to store and reuse design elements?

If you're creating new elements, you can simply drag them directly from your InDesign layout into a CC Library without creating snippets first.

If you've already got hundreds of snippets, that's a slightly different problem, particularly if you're looking to import them all in one go.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

If you've already got hundreds of InDesign snippets (.idms), then scripting might be an option.

A script could potentially loop through a folder of snippets, places each one into InDesign and processes them automatically.

The complication is CC Libraries themselves. As far as I'm aware, they're not directly accessible through InDesign's scripting DOM, so automatically adding each asset to a CC Library isn't straightforward.

However, traditional InDesign Object Libraries (.indl) are scriptable.

It should be possible to write a script that takes hundreds of snippets and imports them into an Object Library, preserving each snippet as an individual library item. You can then Convert your InDesign Library to a CC Library.

That might actually be a simpler solution, depending on why you need them in a CC Library in the first place.

Are you looking to share these snippets with other users, sync them between computers, or simply organise an existing collection?

That would help determine the best approach.

    ---------------------

If you're only looking to share the snippets with other users, then a shared Dropbox or OneDrive folder might actually be a simpler solution.

You could have a shared folder that syncs to everyone's computer, with all your InDesign snippets organised into folders or categories.

Everyone could then access them directly through Finder or File Explorer and drag and drop the snippets straight into their InDesign documents, much like using a library.

There's no need to convert anything, and you retain the original `.idms` files.

You could also add new snippets to the shared folder as you create them, making them available to everyone once synced.

If you've already got hundreds of snippets, this might be far less work than trying to import them all into a CC Library.

It really depends on what you're trying to achieve. If it's simply sharing and reusing InDesign elements, I'd probably go with the shared folder approach.
