use custom actions in Adobe CC

I am looking for a tutorial I watched about two years ago, which showed how you can use custom actions (?) to create a template that populates from a database, like for example (the example they used) when having to make hundreds of trade show badges that have the same design but different names.

Do anyone know of a tutorial that shows how to do this?
