Using "Edit Original"

Opened an .ia file with inDesign. Attempted to edit original with Illustrator.   Illustrator program opens but the file doesn't open.  Already tried re-setting the preferences. What can I do to fix the problem?

    Try selecting Edit With under the Links panel flyout menu, then choose the Illustrator version that you want to use.

    I hope it was really an AI (not .ia) file which Illustrator can open.
