Was CS2 ever offered for free to everyone?

Hello InDesign experts!

A friend and I were recently debating whether CS2 was ever offered for free

to anyone whether you had an old CS2 license or not. It is my understanding

that you technically always had to have an existing CS2 license before you

could legally use the free download and license key. Am I right?

Any insight on this from someone who knows would be appreciated. Thanks!

    On behalf of Adobe:

    No, CS2 was never free!

Yes, when the activation servers for CS2 were decommissioned a number of years ago, to serve customers who needed to reinstall the software (now already fairly obsolete and not viable on current operating system versions), a special download package and serial number was made available for such users.

Anyone else downloading and installing that special CS2 (or Acrobat) installer without having previously been legally licensed for the product is violating the product's licensing terms and it is legally considered theft.

Thanks for the explanation, Bob! Has this been Adobe’s position all along?

Adobe has never offered its primary graphic arts programs for free on their desktop/laptop computers. However, its mobile apps are usually offered for free (but usually only work with Creative Cloud spplications like Photoshop CC or InDesign CC.
