What are the composite fonts, symbolic characters, and roman characters referred to in InDesign?

It seems like some of the same kind of symbols are categorized as Roman and some as Chinese characters, which is a bit confusing.
For example, these below, they are not all Roman characters.

aāáǎàeēéěèiīíǐìoōóǒòuūúǔùüǖǘǚǜ
