Question

What is the best way to change color settings for an indb with 7 indd?

The printer changed their preferred profile, so now I have to convert 7 indd files and the indb in which they are gathered. I don’t have the time to to start over, changing all 7 indd file color settings and then creating a new indb. If I change the current indb color settings and let ID match the individual files, I get “corrupted file” error messages and ID shuts down. What should I do?

With appreciation for the help of community members more experienced than I.

changing all 7 indd file color settings

Hi @jayasri_8989 , Also, just in case it isn’t clear, you have to use Edit>Assign Profiles…, or Convert to Profile… to change a document’s color profile assignments. Edit>Color Settings… wouldn’t necessarily affect an existing document’s color management.

Why not simply export to a PDFx/4 and choose their preferred profile? Why risk giving them a “booked” set of InDesign files?

And by the way, this forum has been dominated the past several weeks with a problem with a Windows Update bad update which is causing files to not save, corrupt, and not work with OneDrive. The fix is to either remove a Windows Update patch to go back to a OS condition before that patch; or else some have had success patching forward to the latest Windows 11 update.

Thank you, Mike. I’ll see if I can select the setting in the .pdf export. Long story short, the printer’s Canon G7 didn’t convert the RGB images to CMYK to the client’s satisfaction, so they want me to use the CMYK setting Coated GraCOL 2006 instead of North America PrePress 2.

Thanks also for the patch tip. That’s for Win 11, right? I am still using the last version of 10.

It affected Win10 and Win11. But I am on Win11 myself.

Good call for GraCOL 2006. It is much better than the ancient and narrow SWOPv2.

As it’s only 7 documents, the easiest way is probably this:
Close your current book file, then open each INDD one by one and apply the new colour settings.
Once that’s done, create a fresh book file and add the updated INDDs to it.

This avoids the crashes that can happen if InDesign tries to force a colour change across the whole book.

Thank you, Eugene! I figured I might have to do that but was hoping to avoid. Do I have to empty any cache after startup if I don’t open the Book?

No you shouldn’t have to do anything - it should be very quick to do.
