Question

What is the latest and best work path for Word into InDesign and then Engineering/Marketing collaboration into next years Rev?

We are a manufacturing company of 300 employees. We have 20 engineers that use Office and Solidworks, and One guy (me) who uses Adobe software to publish the Install Manuals and Submittal Data Sheets. Our printed documents are attractive and professional and clean, even thought they are the end result of the Excel files and Word docs and Solidworks renderings. The process of Word to InDesign is manageable for small companies, but we are growing, and as we add even more engineers and new types of products AND we need to revise a lot of these every year.
       I am swamped.

I have been pushing for Incopy now for years, but it has not (obviously) been approved. I just muscle my way through the influx of marked up PDF files and revised Excel files and word docs.
I open my InDesign files in my license of InCopy and wow,, this is weird.  I need to learn this.

So,, my question is:  Is Incopy the solutionfor a company that wants to allow the Engineers to edit the Installation Instructions and Technical Docs directly?  Or should we hire another Adobe person to just help me keep muscling my way through these ‘Office Doc Rev Requests’? (Word, Excel, commented PDF’s)
     Thanks!   Harvey

InCopy is one option to allow the engineers to edit the content of your InDesign files, another one looking into is WordsFlow from Em Software. It’s an InDesign plugin that allows two-way editing with Word (edits you enter are added to the Word doc and edits they enter into the Word doc are added to InDesign) and one way editing with Excel (their edits in Excel are picked up by InDesign, but not the other way around). You can try it for free to see if it works for you. https://emsoftware.com/products/wordsflow/

An advantage of WordsFlow is that the engineers don’t need to learn a new workflow. InCopy is pretty straightforward but they still have to figure it out.

InCopy is certainly my number one recommendation but if the resistance to that is too much to overcome, look into WordsFlow – Em Software.

Sorry, Bob. I was distracted mid-response.

Okay, but don’t let it happen again. 😂
