Question

What should I consider when importing from Illustrator to InDesign?

I made a magazine layout, which includes illustrations, text and the entire design, it should be printed so I preferred to import it into InDesign. I want it to be exactly the same, without any changes when importing, nevertheless I know almost nothing about this, so... What should I consider when exporting/importing?

I appreciate any advice beforehand.

Thx!

The three Adobe programs that are designed to work together to create a layout are InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop. InDesign should be thought of as home base. That is, the layout with all of its text should be created natively in InDesign using as many pages as are needed. InDesign is the only program that actually has pages rather than a collection of artboards as in Illustrator or what is known as layer comps in Photoshop. Photoshop is designed as primarily a raster based program for continuous tone images which can be either scans of existing photos you might have or images you create yourself using the tools available in the program. Illustrator is a program primarily for line-art (known as vector) that is created using the drawing tools available. Both of these programs do "cross-over" with each other as there are vector options within Photoshop and raster options within Illustrator but as a new user that may be more than you're ready for. The completed art created in Illustrator and/or Photoshop should be "placed" (File Menu>Place) into your layout that you've already created in InDesign and sized to fit. As Derek said it is probably best to take an on-line course in these programs. The information I'm providing is just to give an overview.

You should start off with InDesign which is the application to choose for documents with several pages. Add (Place) images from Photoshop and possibly Illustrator as native files and add the text in InDesign.

It would be worth taking a course (such as the Lynda.com online video tutorials) before proceeding  – you can get a 30-day free trial.
