When I launch InDesign to create a new book, I don't get the typical preset page asking for presets. All I get is a small, square window.

See above description. This only happens when I want to set up a new book. A document opens with the present window, as it should. Anyone have any ideas, before I uninstall and reinstall it?

Thanks!

When you choose File > New > Book the only thing you should see is the Save dialog to give the book a name and where to save, after that a small floating panel should show wherein you can add your documents to the book. The book panel is a container for InDesign documents, so you would not see any other dialog, presets etc.

Right. I forgot to put that in my question. If you look at the reply I gave below, you’ll see what I get after I give it a name and hit save. I usually then get a dialog box offering size, number of pages, etc. That’s not happening.

You are confusing a document with a book file…

    Hi @JudithMoore,

Thanks for reaching out and sorry to hear that you experience this

Could you please confirm the version of InDesign you’re using along with your OS details? Also, it would really help if you could share a screenshot of the window that appears when you go to File > New > Book, so I can better understand what’s showing on your end.

Looking forward to your update so I can assist you further.

    Hi, Abhishek

    iOs 26.3.1

    InDesign 2026 version 21.3.0.60

The image is what I get when I go to file>new>book and hit return.

    Thanks!

And that is correct, exactly what you are supposed to see. Now add your documents to the bookfile (and save it, it asks for that when you close the book panel).

    Can you please elaborate:

Do you mean that when you use the File > New > Book menu, you don’t get the expected dialog? If not, then what operation exactly do you perform?

    Yes. That’s what I mean.
