When saving a idml file in indesign pictures go missing. How do i fix it?

Hi,

I sent an indesign file to a client who doesnt use the latest download of the program. Therefore she couldn't open the file at all.

I tried to save it for older versions, (as an idml-file instead) but then all the pictures go missing. It's 81 pictures so to put them back one by one is not an option because of how much time it will take.

How do I solve this?

Thanks for helping 🙂

Hi emmiaver1,

best use InDesign's packaging feature.

That would do this:

It creates a folder that contains:

1. The InDesign document.

2. An exported IDML file.

3. An exported PDF file.

4. A Links folder with all placed and linked images and graphics stored and linked to the InDesign document.

5. A Document fonts folder that contains all used fonts with two exceptions: Fonts from Adobe Fonts Service ( Typekit ) and complex CJK fonts that are used with e.g. Chinese or Japanese text.

If your client now opens the IDML file with an older version of InDesign, saves that document in the same folder with a new name, closes and re-opens it again all the placed and linked images and graphics with new rendered previews should be there.
