Question

When splitting a caption block can we not have it split the block at where the cursor is?

Currently when splitting a caption block you place your cursor in the block where you want to split it and it duplicates the caption block into two identicle blocks.  It would be far more efficient to actually split the block into two new blocks. The first one preceeding the cursor in the block and then the new one with all the text following the cursor in the second block.

InDesign's caption feature is... idiosyncratic in many ways. I believe that auto-captions suffer from the same glitch as all other marker text in that they will not split or wrap without problems.

While there are workarounds for gotchas like this, including deep mastery of the caption feature itself, the real solution, IMHO, is not to use the feature at all. Create your own caption text boxes and styles and your options will be endless and hassles much fewer.
