Question

Why Is InDesign Deleting My Files?

Over the last week or so, when I’m at my computer, every so often a little alert will pop up in the corner of the screen informing me that Adobe has deleted one of my InDesign files. I’m at a loss as to why this is happening. I tried to resolve the issue using the chat bot on the Adobe site, but I couldn't get it to understand what I was asking. I also sent a message to Adobe Care via Twitter, but I have received no response. Is there a way to directly contact Adobe so I can get this straightened out? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

First of all, I want to thank everyone who took the time to respond to my intiial query. I also want to apologize for not responding sooner. I have been away from my desktop computer for the past few days.

To try to answer some of the questions that have been raised, I am on Mac OS 10.13.6. I realize that this OS is outdated (and perhaps that is contributing to the problems I am having with Adobe). But my iMac is over 10 years old and I'm not sure how many more upgrades it can take.

Needless to say, my version of Adobe InDesign is not up to date either -- which, again, may be at the root of the problem. My version of InDesign is 14.0.3.

It's difficult for me to make a screenshot when the alerts appear on my screen because they slide in and out in seconds -- just long enough for me to see them. I just got one today when I signed on. It was labled Creative Cloud and said that six of my files had been deleted. I've been able to go into Trash and retrieve the files, which I then put in a new folder.

The files that are being deleted are older files that I have not opened for awhile. I actually haven't been using InDesign that much lately -- again, perhaps that is part of the problem -- but I am still paying for it each month. Also, I don't know if there is some sort of cap as far as storage capacity is concerned, but, if there is, I don't think I've come anywhere near reaching it.

I really wish there was a way I could speak to someone from Adobe directly about this.

Thanks again to everyone who has chipped in and tried to help. I really appreciate it.

I've never seen such a message, or heard of something like this happening. It's very strange.

We need a lot more information and some screenshots to get to the bottom of this one.

Hi,

We're so sorry that you were unable to contact us through chat or Adobe Care. Let me assure you that we'll try our best to assist you here. In addition to the screenshot, please share the version of InDesign & OS.

Thanks

@terminallyconfused

There was at least one thread with same problem - deleted files - but there was no message / warning.

Yes, it would be great if you can post a screenshot - or let us know which app is telling you that.

Thanks, Robert. Working on trying to get a screenshot. It's difficult because the alert disappears almost as fast as it appears.

Can you post a screenshot of this alert? I've never seen that. Where do you save your files?

Try screen recording - but you probably would have to run it all the time...

I am not aware of any Adobe app that unilaterally deletes files, at least not working or document files and not ones currently saved and static.

You don't say what OS and version you are using, but I'd suspect it's a system notification reporting ordinary app behavior like creating and deleting lock files.

Has this behavior actually deleted any working/document Adobe file? What are you doing at the time you see these notices?

Hey, James. Thanks for responding. I am on Mac OS 10.13.6. My version of InDesign is 14.0.3. I am not on InDesign when these alerts appear. Sometimes they appear as soon as I turn on my computer. Other times, they appear when I am on other apps like Safari.

If ID isn't even active, it's very difficult to see how it could be deleting files.

Have you confirmed that files are actually being deleted by this event?

Please supply additional information in order to understand your issue: your versions of InDesign and operation system, what file does InDesign delete (is it a file you're working on, or some kind of a random file you're not aware of, or something else), a screenshot of the little alert in the corner of the screen that informs about the file deletion.

Hey, Leo. I am on Mac OS 10.13.6. My version of InDesign is 14.0.3. I am not on InDesign when these alerts appear. I haven't been using InDesgin all that much these days; the files it is deleting are a few years old, alhtough I can't tell if they all date from the same time or not.
