Why is InDesign so incredibly slow with every edit?

I work on Windows. InDesign is very slow during any operation. Sometimes, when I close the program via Task Manager because it won't close otherwise, sometimes it even seems InDesign is running double. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it?

I unchecked ON (Preflight) and it seems to be running ok. Strangely enough I never had this problem till recently. I even think since the last update. Anyway I'll be working next couple of hours and hopefully the problem has been resolved. If not I'll try the other options you mentioned.

    TY!

    Hi @Kraakie,

Sorry to hear that InDesign is running so slowly and occasionally becoming unresponsive.

To help us investigate, could you please confirm your InDesign version, Windows version, and system specifications (RAM and graphics card)? Also, does the slowness occur with all documents, including a new blank document, or only with specific files?

In the meantime, could you please try switching to View > Display Performance > Typical Display and temporarily disabling Live Preflight under Window > Output > Preflight (uncheck On) to see whether performance improves?

If the issue persists, please try backing up and resetting InDesign preferences and then restart InDesign.

If the issue sustains, please test the issue in safe mode to isolate any third-party interference. Ref: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-your-pc-in-safe-mode-in-windows-92c27cff-db89-8644-1ce4-b3e5e56fe234

Looking forward to hearing back the observation.

    Hi @Kraakie,

Thanks for the update! Glad to hear that disabling Live Preflight seems to have improved InDesign's performance.

Please continue working with this setting for now and let us know if the slowdown returns. Since you mentioned that the issue may have started after the recent update, could you also confirm your current InDesign version?

If the issue persists, please try the other troubleshooting steps suggested earlier and share your observations so we can investigate further.

    Thanks for keeping us posted!

    Best,
    Abhishek

How much RAM and what processor are you using? I’m not seeing any serious lag or lock ups here.
