Question

WHY SO MANY APPLICATION FONTS?

How many useless application fonts can Adobe infect an application with? A lot it seems. There's a lot of shared frustration amongst creative professionals when it comes to this issue. And no fix it seems. And in this space / community, it appears Adobe have chosen to shut down disenting voices. Has anybody out there found a sutable work-around? Nobody wants a font menu that stretches for miles - all useless fonts too. Forced to use this forum to hopefully find a soution, because Adobe's Customer Support (phone support) must be amongst the very worst in the world. I've seen it completely ruin many work days, for various colleagues. I've had the misfortune myself. So, is there any way to disable / remove / delete / hide the hundreds of useless fonts in InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop?

Mac OS X comes with new a family of high-quality Japanese fonts called Hiragino. The fonts also contain high-quality glyphs for the Western European subset of the Latin script.

Microsoft Windows does come with too many fonts that cannot be removed, maybe some are required for multilingual, and others are included for compatibility with some apps on OS, regretfully many of that bunch cannot be uninstalled, I would like to see an option for desactivating if that were possible.

Hi

Any chance you just upgraded to Catalina? Here is a list of all the fonts that come with Catalina. It’s an Apple issue, not an Adobe issue. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210192

If I’m guessing wrong, please give your OS and name some of the fonts.

Hi, brand new Macbook Pro, running Mohave straight out of the box - haven't installed Catalina yet.

You can use InDesign’s Find Font to see whether a font has been installed by Adobe and is required by ID, or if it was installed by OSX and is required by the System.

Required system fonts installed by Apple would be in /System/Library/Fonts

The required Adobe fonts get installed in the application folder /Applications/Adobe InDesign CC 20XX/Resources/Required/fonts

Everything else should be manageable. Apple installs fonts in Library/Fonts and ~user/Library/Fonts, but fonts in those folders are not required by the OS and should be manageable (they might be needed by other apps like browsers) :

As others have already indicated, it would be nice if you could mention a few font names, to get an inkling regarding the unwanted families, and their possible origins and locations.

But I do agree with you and many others that the plethora of available fonts, including numerous language-dependent families, the auto-activated document–dependent fonts, and those cloud-based font services, sported by an interface which doesn't deserve a medal for a brilliant UI, can be quite challenging...

Hi, Yep, specifics include Hiragino Kahu, Kozuka, Al Bayan, Al Nile, Al Tarikh - to a name a few.

Hi mcraft, I was about to post about the exact same issue you are talking about ("required" Adobe fonts included in CC font lists). New to Mojave and new to CC (as in a week ago), but have been on a Mac since 1991 and using InDesign since 2008 (Quark before that!). Seeing the condescending (i.e., "duh") replies you received here, I'm kind of reticent to post my question now. Like you, I prefer my font list as tight as possible. Have you found a way to hide/disable/delete these supposedly "required" fonts? Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks.

Quite a rant there. The only thing you're lacking is why you think all of those fonts have anything to do with Adobe, what version of InDesign you're using and what operating system.

Oh, you're also way off base on shutting down dissenting voices. I have no idea what you're talking about.

It sounds like you may be ready to purchase a font manager application. Then you'll be able to activate/deactivate the fonts you want work with and many other things:

Which a Font Manager would you recommend Steve (if any)?
