Question

Will opening a CC22 interior novel file in CC23 potentially rerun text or introduce errors?

Hi! I have a middle grade novel file that's about 112 facing pages with linked text wrapping around artwork on almost every spread. The publisher I'm working with opened the legacy CC22 file in CC23 to make a few changes and then sent it back to me. Do we think they potentially introduced rerun or rewrap errors? Trying to decide if I need to have them re-edit the original CC22 file.

Why don't you just have 2023 installed (as well as 2022 of course) so you can see it as they see it? No collaboration workflow should ever use mixed versions.

And no book should ever go to press without the author reviewing a PDF of the files the publisher will use.

Any text threads that were touched after opening in the new version were re-composed. Whether that casued a reflow is unknowable without looking (and as @Bill Silbert mentioned to open again in the older version will require a trip through .dml which will force a recompose of the entire document).

Frankly, I would have them force a recompose of all stories (cmd-opt-/ on Mac, ctrl-alt-/ on PC) since you want to be sure if anything is going to happen it has and you won't be surprised by something far from where you are looking while working, then export a PDF for you to proof.

Hi Peter, @Cara30792213tvwz , apparently is opening a CC2022 doc in CC2023—it’s not CC2023 to CC2022

I understand that, but stories that are touched will recompose moving to a new version because of text engine changes. The odds of having a stray line ending change increaeses as the length of the story increases.

It wasn't clear if the files would also be reopened in the old version as well for further work.

If they saved the file up to CC 2023 and you have to open that file again in CC 2022 then it will need to be made into an IDML file for you to open it in CC 2022. Then, as Rob points out, you could possibly have a problem. Like Bob said, though, why not open it and find out?

Hi @Cara30792213tvwz , I’ve never seen it happen opening a doc from an older version into a newer version. If you were saving a CC2023 doc as an IDML, or converting it backward to an earlier version, the risk of a reflow might be greater.

Open it and check. Nobody here can possibly give you a yes or no answer.
