Working from OneDrive/SP with Indesign corrupts the file

If I have an .indd project file inside a OneDrive folder on my desktop (I like to work on the cloud to avoid any loss of data), after a few saves the .indd file gets corrupted. What is this mess? why won’t Adobe update such a simple feature and make it work with Cloud apps? This is 2026 ladies and gentlemen.

I have managed to update to the latest WIN11 version, bug seems to have disappeared (for now). Thanks all for the help!

I had a similar issue with a file that I had download from onedrive and kept crashing on my mac on Tahoe. Because of deadlines, I guess I didn’t respond on time, so my thread here got deleted unfortunately.

I just checked again if the issue still persists with the same file (I was able to finish working on it without any problems on another Mac).

By deleting one element after another and trying to export, I figured out that the issue was related to one logo that was creating problems. It wasn’t a missing link, as I downloaded the whole package, but I did download from OneDrive whereas my other projects are stored locally.

This is not an Adobe issue, it’s OneDrive. Unlike true NAS cloud storage solutions, OneDrive is a file sync application, much like Dropbox, so its mechanism is constantly trying to update the files in all locations defined in your OneDrive access. The problem with working on a file stored there is that when you open an InDesign file, it’s “open” and vulnerable, so if OneDrive tries to sync it in that state, bad things can happen. You do you, but I do not recommend working on files in this manner.

Respectfully disagree here, @Brad @ Roaring Mouse. I have been working in Dropbox and OneDrive folders for many years and would never work any other way and strongly recommend it.

As long as the files are set to be available off line, you are indeed working locally with the benefit of a back up happening in the background. In addition, every save is kept as a version and should you have an issue with a file, even accidental deletion or over writing it, you can roll back with a couple of mouse clicks.

OneDrive and Dropbox have both saved my bacon on more than one ocassion.

I respect that. And to be clear I use both services a lot as well, but when I’m working on a large project, I want to keep my files “close”,  Most of the issues I see with InDesign files is what dropbox “does” with the Temp file while it’s open. Neither service “should” sync until it sees a file lock, but I’ve seen it mess this up (not at all often, but it has happened), so I don’t risk playing with important files.

I also use dropbox as a cloud backup solution using Retrospect (yes, I might be the last person still using this!), and THAT has saved my bacon

    Cheers!

I had success patching forward to the latest Microsoft update (KB5074105) Others say to roll back the one update (KB5074109) that appears to be causing this. It turns out that this is a Microsoft Windows Update problem.

In addition to what Bob has already said:

Here’s the thread with instructions on what Windows updates you need to uninstall and/or install:

Your IT people should know by now that Microsoft released a faulty Windows update and that a new update that should fix the problems of the faulty update has been released by now. Thus, to my understanding, the IT people should perform the necessary updates on your machine.

Full version of InDesign and (I’m assuming) Windows, please. There were some recent Windows updates that caused these kinds of issues and an optional update that fixed it.

BTW, I always work in OneDrive and Dropbox folders. More people should, but make sure you have your files set to be available off-line.
