Question

8TB on QNAP server or I have to buy local hard drives?

I have 8TB photo and video library on a local QNAP Server. And a 3.5Gb LRC Catalog on Macos 18gb m3 laptop. Adding new pictures to the catalog is a pain in the a**. Everytime I add 200/500 photos the "Import files at their current location" message stills forever (at least 45 minutes).  I tried SMB, AFP and smoke signals :). How this escenario has to be done? only usb-c local hard drives scenario is valid to avoid these slow working of LRC?

which options did you find to get better performance.

Best Regards,

Ariel

You don't say much about the other factors, such as how the QNAP is attached and if you are building previews.  I have my Synology (8 bay, so many actuators) attached at 10GB.  If I import (ADD) with minimal previews, it takes very little time.  If I import with 2880 standard previews (4K monitor), it takes significantly longer. (I am now using John Ellis' AnySource plugin, which will build previews in background)

I’ve tried everything—WiFi, a 2.5Gbps wired connection—but Lightroom Classic remains painfully slow when importing (170.000 photos with date folder structure), browsing or managing my library.

Out of curiosity, I tested Tonfotos on macOS today, and I was genuinely impressed. While it’s not yet my go-to tool for managing my photo library, the speed and simplicity of its interface really stand out. I truly hope Lightroom Classic can someday match that level of responsiveness and usability.
