Adding Exported Photos to Catalog is Extremely Slow

I exported 479 photos to a folder with “Add to This Catalog” selected.  The export proceeded as expected but the operation to add the photos to the catalog was painfully slow.  It was taking 4-10 seconds for each image.  During the time to add the photos to the catalog all other importing operations are frozen.  During the extended add photos operation LrC is consuming about 7-10% of CPU.  The rate at which photos were added to the catalog is much slower than other operations that add photos to the catalog.

The post was moved from Bugs to Questions because of the forum rules as this issue is not considered a bug YET although it appears to be a bad design.  That's the rules, like it or not.

As far as the slow “add to catalog” issue, this has been the situation for a long time.  I just tested this on 240 photos and the import was about 1 second per photo after the export completed.  If I simply import using the “copy” option the same import of the 240 photos completes in just a few seconds.  I have no idea if the “add to catalog” creates 1:1 previews etc.  I never export/add except for rare occasions and then it's only one or a few photos.
