After cropping the resultant photo is much smaller when sending by email.

How do I ensure that cropped photos can be emailed as a large size.

Currently, depending the degree of cropping, these photos are smaller than I'd like.

The size of a jpg file in MB is determined by four factors:

    1. The pixel dimensions of the image - obviously cropping involves discarding pixels and thus reducing the number of pixels and the file size. Likewise downsampling in the Export dialog.

    2. Jpgs are always 8 bits - hence even before compression the image data is half of what it would be when written to 16 bits.

    3. The amount of compression - better quality = less compression and vice versa.

    4. The amount of detail and/or noise in the image - areas of uniform color compress better.

Also once you Crop an image and then Export it the size will be smaller than the original. Cropping and exporting removes pixels that are in the original making the image smaller. That along with a exported JPG will be much smaller in size, MB's, from the original RAW image.

My apologies to you all for not replying before now but, until now,  I've been without access to the Internet.

I will have to learn more before answering your questions as I'm not as computer literate as I would like to be. But, in the meantime, I thank you all for your willingness to help me.

    If I choose <Apple Mail> and size <large - 800 px long, high Quality> and click <send> Apple Mail shows <E-Mail-Size: 5 KB>.

I save the shown/attached photo via <save attachement> (CTRL-Click on the attached file). The file now has 234 KB.

Define "much smaller". Give us the exact numbers, how big was the original file, and how big the e-mailed photo was. EXACT NUMBERS!

Also please answer the questions asked by the others.

    Some questions.

    1) What file type are you starting with, JPG or RAW?

    2) How are you emailing the image, from the LR Option "Email Photo" or some other method. Like from your email client on your computer?

    3) If from the LR option "Email Photo" at the bottom of the emailing dialog what is selected in the "Preset:" section?

If you're trying to e-mail directly from Lightroom, maybe it will be necessary for you to export the image first. That way you will have more control over the size of the exported image. Then use your e-mail program and attach the exported image.
