AI and range masking disabled in V12

With the latest update to V12 the AI and range masks options are disabled on my desktop computer. Also the people detection is not doing anything. On my (ancient, GPU not supported) laptop it is working, so why not on the desktop pc ( I7, onboard GPU Intel UHD630)?

Any tips? Suggestions?

I am able to reproduce — and solve — this problem on my completely different configuration. But let’s see if the reason on my system is the same as yours.

On my system, AI and range masking normally work as expected, but I asked myself: Some features are disabled for older Process Versions, could that be it? So I went to a folder with old raw images that use Process Version 1, and sure enough, AI and range masking do not work.

But if all I do is update the Process Version to the current version, then they work.

On your system, when AI and range masking does not work, are the images using an older Process Version? And if you update the images to the current Process Version (in the Develop module, choose Settings > Update to Current Process Version), do AI and range masking now work?

You are right. I was playing with older photos which still used older process version. I thought I already updated them, but that was not the case.I believe there use to be an exclamation mark on photos with older version, but not anymore.

Anyway, this solves the issue for me.Although it may still be good idea to buy decent GPU as prices are getting a little bit back to normal...

Thanks for the help!

Yes, the exclamation mark was on the bottom right corner as shown in the first screenshot below. However, it's now indicated by a lightning symbol at bottom right of the Histogram.

You might want to check for updates on the graphics driver. There has been at least one update since the one you are using. It seems there are frequent updates, but I don't know if that would make a difference. I am using the same Intel GPU, and everything seems to be working fine. However, I'm using Windows 11 and I don't know if that makes a difference.

I downloaded latest driver from Intel, but that does not make any difference.

Well, yes, the UHD is the integreated video controller. There is no other video card in the system. Lightroom is using the UHD630, as can be seen below:

and also from system information:

I also tried disabling the GPU support in settings ( on the old laptop is was disabled as well), but that did not make a difference ( even with restart of LR).

LR's AI masking uses graphics drivers in ways much different than gaming, video editing, or even LR's basic image processing. It's constantly tripping over such bugs, which is why users must constantly update to the latest drivers.

It looks like you have an Intel Core I7 with integrated UHD Graphics 630, which Intel calls "10th Generation". Last summer, Intel announced that they were moving graphics driver support for 10th Generation and older processors to a "legacy support model" for which they "will provide software support for affected products on critical fixes and security vulnerabilities only." There are lots of reports here of problems with AI masking and the UHD Graphics 630.

Unfortunately, it looks like Intel will no longer be providing regular bug fixes for the graphics driver for your processor.

Double unfortunately, AI masking does not obey the setting of Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor, even though it would be trivial for Adobe to implement it. LR half-heartedly tries to determine if the GPU is compatible, but based on all the posts here, it clearly fails much of the time to detect buggy drivers. Ironically, LR correctly determines that your ancient laptop doesn't have a compatible GPU, and thus it executes AI masking on the CPU (albeit slowly).

So that's why AI masking works on your ancient laptop but not your newer desktop. You have two options: Buy a new graphics card for your computer, or buy a new computer.

Please add your constructive opinion to this feature request:

and be sure to click the Upvote button at the top-right and Follow at the bottom of the first post. That will make it a little more likely that Adobe will consider implementing the feature and you'll be notified when they do.

why not on the desktop pc ( I7, onboard GPU Intel UHD630)?

That desktop computer, the Intel UHD 630, is probably not a GPU, but an integrated video control, with no VRAM. Does this desktop have a slot for an actual GPU?

If it has an actual GPU, likely in a slot, what is it?

Interested in seeing the display section of the system information that LrC will report. Please click on Help, then System Ino, copy that, then paste in (a reply) the bit about the display.
