AI edits with remove tool and masks need to all be updated all the time

took these steps

1. Go to Library Grid view.

2. Click All Photographs.

3. Do the menu command Photo > Stacking > Expand All Stacks.

4. Select all the photos.

5. Do the menu command Photo > Develop Settings > Update AI Settings.

only updated a few, not all of them

questions

why do they requires updating and why did the update AI setting miss most of them

These symptoms can occur when LR can't write the .lrcat-data file for some reason, either because LR has corrupted it or there is a permissions issue. LR stores computed masks in that file. Try these steps:

1. In LR, do Edit > Catalog Settings > General > Show. That will open Windows File Explorer on the current catalog folder.

2. Exit LR.

3. Move the file <catalog>.lrcat-data to the Desktop.

4. Start LR.

5. In Library, select all photos and do Photo > Develop Settings > Update AI Settings. That will recompute all the AI masks, which could take a while. But it won't update Generative Removes, so you'll have to go to each photo with Remove, click on Remove, and then Update.

Same issue here on LrC 13.5 + Sonoma – the “Update AI Settings” command randomly skips 70-80% of masked edits, especially if the catalog was upgraded from v12.

Quick fix that saved me: Switched to Denoise + Generative Remove via a standalone AI tool outside Lightroom (no constant re-updating needed). Found the best one here → https://aitoolranker.com (they’ve ranked every Photoshop-level AI editor with actual speed & quality tests).

@levi_8110: "Same issue here on LrC 13.5"

Note that the most recent version of Lightroom Classic is 15.0.1, and LR 15.0 fixed a serious bug that causes the symptoms reported in this thread:

I am experiencing the same issue even after following these instructions. My lightroom CC is up to date and the catalog lives on my desktop. It does not matter if I "Update AI settings" they seem to go away and wont stay.  My computing power is not the issue and i've tried restarting.

@briannak61661338, do the menu command Help > System Info. What is the version of Lightroom Classic shown on the first line?
