Question

Aligning images in Lightroom contact sheet

I am putting together a book for a client which is a catalog of antique bottles. There are about 2000 images of bottles. Each image also includes a box with details of the bottle. Each of the boxes are exactly the same size but the bottles are many different sizes. This means that although the images are all the same width they vary greatly in height. When I use Lightroom to make jpeg contact sheets (eventually to be placed into InDesign) the images are aligned on their horizontal centres. The client does not like this and would like the images to be aligned on their bottom edges. I cannot see how to do this. Is it even possible?

This solution rather depends on how the images are shot and how much space there is around the bottles.

in the Print module use one of the contact sheet presets and check the box "zoom to fill" This will immediately have the effect of aligning the bottom edges (top too) but may cut off significant image area. Uncheck the "Keep Square" box and adjust the cell widths to see if that helps.

Its possible as its only a contact sheet that the image area that is eliminated bothers the client less that the non uniformity of the sheet itself.

Alternatively, apply a crop of the same aspect ratio to all images keeping as much image area as possible. Then when you move to the contact sheet they will line up no matter which boxes are checked/unchecked

I can not find any way to align to the base of each photo in the Contact Sheet options. I also note that the automatic "Contact Sheet" builder in Photoshop does exactly the same -aligns the center.

So I think you cannot do it, with automated systems in Adobe programs, anyway.

The Lightroom print "Custom Package" allows you to place images on a page as a contact sheet and align them in any way 'freehand' , BUT you could not do that with 2000 photos- that would take a "Month of Sundays" !!
