All "Remove" functions suddenly do nothing (Gen AI or otherwise)

I've been loving the Generative Remove feature but since the past couple days but it and all other spot remove features are completely broken for me.  I edit an image as always, using the Remove tools.  It shows the edits in the edit history, but there is no visible effect on the image.

Things I've tried (really, everything I can think of):

  • With and without Generative AI checked
    • With Gen AI, clicking Refresh and changing Variations
  • With and without Object Aware
  • Using the Heal, Stamp and Remove modes
  • Restarting LR
  • Disabling GPU
  • Purging caches (in Performance settings)
  • Optimizing catalog
  • Exporting the image (exported file appears identical to the LR preview)
  • Switching between Develop and Loupe views
  • Rendering 1:1 previews
  • Purging Smart Previews
  • Building Smart Previews then checking the Use Smart Previews instead of Originals for editing
  • Rewinding and fast-forwarding edit history
  • Clicking "Reset" in the Remove tool panel and starting over
  • Using Remove before or after AI Lens Blur

All other Develop edits work normally that I've tried, including complex ones such as masks and AI lens blur.

v13.3.1 on macOS Sonoma 14.4 on a 2020 M1 MBP 13".  My images are "high efficiency ★" compressed RAW from a Nikon Z8 (latest firmware), but neither this nor anything else I can think of have changed recently with regard to my images or workflow.  I believe it worked after upgrading to v13.3.1 and suddenly stopped working in the days since then, although I'm not sure exactly when.

(I tried to attach a sample image but this forum gave me the error "The attachment's nz8_2301.nef content type (image/x-nikon-nef) does not match its file extension and has been removed.", which is ridiculous.  It won't let me upload a .zip file either.  So let me know if you'd like me to send a sample some other way.)

Is your opacity perhaps set too low?

Same for me.   AI has stopped working again...   It seems to come and go - unsure why?

Same thing here. It works and then it doesn't. It's great when it does.

Generative ai has stopped working completely...   Super frustrating as I was enjoying the new capabilities, but clearly not fully developed yet.

"smh, Opacity was the problem.  PEBKAC."

This has happened to many people since the new Remove was released. I'm guessing there is some defect in LR that is setting Opacity to 1 behind the user's back -- there's no reason you'd normally want it set to 1.

I'm still stuck syncing back and forth from LR CC, but that's a separate issue.

Update: I synced to LR CC (also on macOS) where I was able to successfully apply Gen AI Remove to my image, but the edits won't sync back.  When I open Develop on the edited image in LR Classic, there's a gray screen and spinning beachball for several seconds; then it opens, but in a state prior to all edits made in LR CC (neither Remove nor others, including basic/exposure).

Actually, if you want to post a screenshot, or some other small image it is best if you use the Insert Photo button

From:

Add screenshots, images, and attachments

As a best practice, please add images (jpeg, png, etc.) via the Insert Photos tool

And use the attachments for the big files, like crash reports.

As for file types,? hmmm
