Question

Are keywords hierarchy preserved within the image file, and during Export?

I've tried reading some articles but they're not super clear on how keyword hierarchy is preserved, and when it isn't.

Thanks in advance!

LR saves the hierarchical form of keywords in the metadata field XMP:HierarchicalSubject. This field is not part of the XMP standard and is generally only recognized by LR.  Both the commands Metadata > Save Metadata To File and Export (when Write Keywords As Lightroom Hierarchy is checked) will write XMP:HierarchicalSubject.  When you import a file containing that field, LR will import the hierarchical keywords rather than the flat keywords.

What happens when another program tries reading the keywords?

Are they treated as individual tags, lost/forgotten, or some recognise this unique heirarchy?

So it looks like keywording in Lightroom Classic is only useful if using the program and not switching in the future (you never know).

Like @johnrellis said, "This field is not part of the XMP standard and is generally only recognized by LR." That means that (al)most all other applications will simply read them as flat (individual) keywords.
