Question

Assistance with editing in PS and finishing in Classic

For starters, can someone clarify to me the difference between Raw and RGB files? I mainly shoot Raw, though it was brought to my attention that the Classic diologue box for edit in > PS (Make copy, edit original, edit copy with LR adjustments) only comes up if RGB file is selected, I'm slightly confused as to why it wouldn't come up with Raw files. I'm also interested in what the best approach would be for someone like me who just relies on PS for a small handful of layer adjustments, and finish the rest of adjustments in Classic?

Aditional question for Classic only, How can I keep adjustments such as aspect ratio change, to stay on my selected photo without it reverting back to original if I want to make a 'reset' to all other edits?

Thanks

For 'raw' image files (NEF, ARW, CR3, etc) the process is-

LrC > (invisible ACR) > Ps

Lightroom-Classic handles the rendering of raw > RGB (via CR) as the new document in Ps, and only the TIF or PSD derivative is created when you [SAVE] in Photoshop.

For rendered RGB files (JPG, TIF, PSD,)

LrC > Dialog to choose > Ps

The choose dialog is needed because of the possibility of over-writing the RGB file.

Note: that in the dialog "Edit Original" is referring to the RGB you have selected to send to Ps, and not a raw image file that came from the camera.

"keep adjustments"- If the Crop (Aspect ratio?) was done very early in the Develop History you can clear/delete all edit steps that came after the crop-

Otherwise I think you would need to reset edits in each of the Develop Panels. If you hold down the [ALT] key you will see in many panels a [Reset] choice.

Others may have suggestions for this question.

Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 15.1.1, Photoshop 27.3.1, ACR 18.1.1, Lightroom 9.0, Lr-iOS 10.4.0, Bridge 16.0.2 .

Raw is a read-only file format, and a format that Photoshop cannot directly work with. The raw file needs to be converted to an RGB copy first before Photoshop can do anything with it, so that happens under the hood. Photoshop also can't save back into a raw file, so 'edit original' is impossible and so is 'edit a copy'. The only thing Photoshop can do is edit a converted RGB copy with the Lightroom adjustments applied to it, so that is why you do not get that dialog. There would be nothing to choose in that dialog. In fact, in the very first versions of Lightroom that is what actually happened. You did get the dialog, but only 'Edit a copy with Lightroom adjustments' could be chosen. The other two options were dimmed.
