Question

Backup classic to cloud please

I have been using Lightroom for several years before subscribing and therefore have thousands of images. From doing a little searching, it seems that the only way to get full backup to the cloud is to import directly into Lightroom CC in the beginning.  Is this indeed the case? Does Adobe offer no way to backup previous images to the cloud?

Thanks for any help.

"Lightroom CC", if that is what you call the cloud version, is now just called Lightroom. There is no "CC" designation anywhere anymore. Don't ask why, just blame Adobe. If you have Lightroom and Lightroom Classic synchronized, whenever you import images to Lightroom, or take images with a mobile device, those images should automatically import to Lightroom Classic as well. Any adjustments made either in Lightroom or Lightroom Classic should impact the image on other devices. That is the way the system is supposed to work. However, these adjustments are only being stored in catalogs, they are not being applied directly to images. You need to remember that. And you also need to remember that it is your responsibility to have a separate backup of ALL images separate from whatever you are working on in either version of Lightroom.

I do back up my images. This was a question about cloud ONLY. If the
images are in Lightroom classic, where are they?

In a sense, your question contradicts itself. Lightroom Classic stores images in folders on your computer. If you choose to do so, you can create collections of images in Lightroom Classic and then share those collections. Those collections can then be seen in Lightroom for the cloud and on your mobile devices as smart previews. But the master images, the full-sized images, are still in Lightroom Classic.

If you want full-sized images in the cloud then you need to import them directly into Lightroom (for the cloud). If you have the two programs synchronized then those images will automatically be downloaded and added to your Lightroom Classic catalog, so the master images will then be in both programs. Images imported into Lightroom for the cloud impact your allotted cloud storage, smart previews do NOT impact that allotment. Photos taken with your cell phone work the same way. If you have Lightroom installed on your cell phone then those images will automatically be in your heart storage and will automatically download to Lightroom classic.

As stated by JimHess, the Lightroom cloud should not be considered a backup. There are many cloud backup services available, I use Carbonite, it's all automated, I don't have to do anything.

Using Lightroom for the cloud should NOT be considered the backup of your images. If that is the only place you have your images stored you don't have a backup. You need to have a backup of your images in addition to what you have stored in Lightroom for the cloud. That could be another cloud service, an external hard drive connected to your computer, or what ever. But you are responsible for creating your own backup of your images.

Forgive the depth of my ignorance. I regularly back up my catalog to the
hard drive and to an external hard drive. I have been using lightroom cc
on my tablet as a failsafe in case of card failure while traveling,
especially for underwater shots. (I also sync some curated edited
collections from desktop to lightroom CC to show to others) I might do a
light edit to post to Facebook, but all other editing I do at the desktop,
and I download RAW images directly from the card. So, my novice question
is how do I open images from Lightroom CC into Lightroom Classic and how
are edits done in CC shown or are they?
