Backup Saved to Wrong Location

I moved my Lightroom folder on my iMac's Pictures folder to an external hard drive due to lack of disc space. I manually restarted LR from the external drive. All is good, except it seems that LR is saving the once-a-day backups to the Pictures folder, instead of the new location. LR shows the catalog it is using is in the Lightroom/Backups folder on the external hard drive, but it does not save the new backups to that folder.

The backup location is something you have to tell LR where to save it. By default it stores it in the same folder as the catalog file under a subfolder named Backups. But once that happens it is Hard Wired to always use that folder unless you specifically tel it to save it to some other folder. When the backup dialog box comes up there is a button that says "Choose". Click that button and point it to whatever folder you want the backups store in.

Placing the backups in the same folder, and on the same drive, the real catalog file is in is a VERY BAD idea. If that drive fails your catalog and all your backups of your catalog will be GONE.

Thank you so much for your very prompt and concise reply. My external hard drive with my photos and the LR catalog, is backed up daily to a second, identical external hard drive by SuperDuper! When I purchased my iMac, I bought the largest HD possible: a measly 256GB SSD, which is now critically low on space. The only other option in my mind would be to store the backups and current catalog (as I understand it, the current catalog is simply the most recent backup, because that's how I have it set in Preferences) on the 1 TB HD2 internal, spinning disc drive, which is not backed up very often. So, in my mind, storing it where I have it is the safest option. Please correct me if I am wrong, and again, thank you!

If you do a daily backups (Clone) using Super duper then I guess it would be ok to store the backups with your catalog on the internal drive. As both are backed up to a second external.

No the REAL catalog file is not the most current backup. The backups that LR makes are in case of a damaged or lost real catalog file.

I think you are low on disk space for 2 reasons.

1) You have a small SSD.

2) You store you images files on the SSD.

The actual catalog file isn't that big. If you have LR make a backup of the catalog file every day that will fill up your drive also. You should delete the backups that are over one week old.

There is no need to keep that many backups. LR does not Auto delete them. That is up to the user to do that maintenance.

What exact version of LR are you using?
