Question

Blank Thumbnails and High CPU Temps While Rebuilding

Today, when I opened Lightroom Classic, I noticed that all the thumbnails were missing. Anytime I click on a folder, the thumbnails are blank, and Lightroom begins rebuilding only the thumbnails visible on the screen. As I scroll down, new blank thumbnails appear, and Lightroom starts rebuilding those as well.

The bigger issue, however, is that during the thumbnail rebuilding process, my CPU temperatures soar. They hover around 80°C, with spikes reaching as high as 95°C. This has been happening for a while, but I used to only notice it with new photos, so I tolerated it. Now, even just scrolling (through folders where thumbnails were not yet rebuilt) causes the CPU to overheat, which is becoming a serious problem. I have like 14000 photos, so... yeah.

My main question is: Is this normal?Additionally, what could be causing all the thumbnails to disappear, and what can I do to bring the CPU temperatures down when Lightroom is rebuilding the thumbnails? I've already set JPEG previews to medium size and unchecked the option to generate previews in parallel, but the issue persists.

System Specifications:

Lightroom Classic Version: 13.5.1
Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX Z490-G GAMING
CPU: Intel Core i9-10900K
RAM: ADATA XPG SPECTRIX D50 RGB 32GB DDR4-3600 CL18
Cooling: SILVERSTONE Permafrost 240mm ARGB AIO
GPU: Nvidia RTX 2080Ti
PSU: SilverStone 850W 80+ Gold Full Modular

Any suggestions on what might be causing the high temps and disappearing thumbnails, and how to fix these issues?

Lightroom Classic begins rebuilding only the thumbnails visible on the screen. As I scroll down, new blank thumbnails appear, and Lightroom Classic starts rebuilding those as well.

Symptoms that the previews were deleted/moved or have become corrupted. The only thing I can advise is to let the preview rebuilding continue.

The bigger issue, however, is that during the thumbnail rebuilding process, my CPU temperatures soar. They hover around 80°C, with spikes reaching as high as 95°C.

Yes, generating previews requires the CPU to work constantly, which generates heat. Heat buildup indicates the cooling system in your computer is not working properly. You need to check all fans to see they are running, vaccuum out the case and vaccuum out the vents that let air flow into/out of the case. You need to make sure the vents are not obstructed by a wall or by furniture.

Thanks! Is there anything that can be done to lower the CPU load?

Well no, that's what happens when you build previews, and so its expected. The real problem, as I said, is your cooling system isn't working properly.
