Borderless prints expanded beyond paper size in lightroom classic

I am working with an Epson SC-P700, Windows 11, Photoshop & lightroom classic. The Epson drivers can show a preview of the image to be printed before committing ink to paper.

I am trying to print grids of photos on A3 and A4 sized paper which will be folded into booklets - the folding process means alternate rows are inverted.

In lightroom classic I start by selecting A3 borderless in Print Setup. I can define a cell 419.8x297mm which is the full size of A3 without any border deductions. And in layout style I select custom package. I want an 8x4 grid, so I set a cell size of 52.475 (419.8/8) x 74.25 (297/4), having set the size I just keep clicking the cell size button under add to package, and I get all 32 cells without going to a new page.

I put pictures in the cells and print. What the Epson preview (and print if I allow) shows me the lightroom image been heavily clipped at two edges and lightly clipped at the the other two, but it does print right to the edge of he the paper.

The first image is from the inverted row so it is the top left corner of the page. you can see more the more of the hands at the bottom of the frame. The second one appears that way up and look under the D of “BAD” on the T shirt or at the elbow and you’ll see it is clipped.

If I export the page as a JPEG and take into photoshop, PS sees it as a 419.8x297mm file but when I come to print (with A3 borderless chosen) I get warned the image is too big and clipping will occur

If I take the same file to Epson’s “Print layout” program the sizing is correct. It only seems to be the Adobe programs that scale the image up by 1-2% in printing.

Anyone familiar which this ?

This varies by printer manufacturer / model, but two variants of Borderless printing exist: with automatic added scaling to compensate for any paper misalignment, or true-to-scale (which is the same as standard printing, only not imposing any sheet margins).

LrC would never itself be adding scaling to borderless jobs: this is applied (or not) in the print driver.

So it could be that (so far as the print driver options that LrC is employing) the mode of borderless printing has been selected that is not true to scale.

Lower-end devices may not offer any choice on this, perhaps because it is presumed one is sending a single image at a time - whereby accuracy will be less important than fully covering the paper. In that case, the only way to achieve accuracy may be to print non-borderless but onto oversized paper - and then trim.

But in the driver options for my R3000 I do recall a “true-to-scale” option being available. If you have filled the paper size, you will then need the paper to be feeding exactly straight and aligned of course: no wiggle room.
