Brightness value in metadata

Hi, thank you for the opportunity to send this question. I hope i (as a german native speaker) can clearly explain, what i dont understand. 

What exactly is the brightness value in the metadata in lightroom, how is it calculated, why could it be negative, i find nowhere a good explanation.
